Nigeria, a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), relies on crude oil for more than 70 percent of government revenue and about 90 percent of foreign exchange earnings.

Officials at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) said the revenue surge was supported by higher Brent crude prices, which averaged above S85 per barrel during the period. Production also stabilized at around 1.6 million barrels per day, following years of disruptions caused by theft, pipeline vandalism and underinvestment.

Experts warn, however, that the windfall may not translate into long term stability unless Nigeria diversifies its economy. “Oil earnings are volatile and subject to global price swings,” said economist Bismarck Rewane. “Nigeria must invest in refining capacity, infrastructure and non-oil sectors to reduce vulnerability.”

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has repeatedly urged Nigeria to use oil revenues to strengthen fiscal buffers and invest in social programs. Rising global energy demand, particularly from Asia, has boosted Nigeria’s export earnings, but analysts caution that any downturn in prices could quickly erode gains.

Public reaction has been mixed. While many Nigerians welcome the revenue boost, critics argue that ordinary citizens rarely feel the impact of oil wealth due to corruption, mismanagement and weak public services. Civil society groups have called for greater transparency in how oil earnings are spent.

Globally, Nigeria’s performance matters because it is a key supplier to Europe and Asia, and its stability affects international energy markets. The country’s ability to sustain production and manage revenues will shape both domestic development and its role in global energy security.

The figure represents one of the highest short-term earnings in recent years, underscoring the central role of oil in Africa’s largest economy.
