Union representatives criticized the alleged instruction, while political figures condemned what they described as an unacceptable restriction on female employees.

The Eiffel Tower operator has faced pressure to explain the circumstances surrounding the visit and the alleged directive. The dispute has also raised broader questions in France about how cultural and religious sensitivities should be balanced with the country’s long-standing commitment to equality between men and women.

France has a complex relationship with religion in public life. The country’s tradition of laïcité, or secularism, was formally reinforced by the 1905 law separating churches and state institutions. Debates over religious expression have repeatedly placed questions of secularism, equality and public accommodation at the center of French political life.

The Eiffel Tower itself has long stood as a symbol of modern France and Paris. Built for the 1889 World’s Fair to mark the centenary of the French Revolution, the 330-meter landmark initially faced opposition from prominent French artists and intellectuals. It later became one of the world’s most recognizable monuments and a major destination for international visitors.

The strike temporarily disrupted access to one of France’s busiest tourist attractions, underscoring how a workplace dispute at a globally recognized landmark can quickly become a national political issue.

Authorities and the tower’s management are expected to address the allegations as the labor dispute continues.

(VIDEO) PARIS — The Eiffel Tower was closed to visitors after employees went on strike over allegations that female staff members were instructed to remain out of sight during a visit by a Hindu religious group, prompting criticism from French politicians and renewed debate over workplace equality and secularism.
