Real Madrid’s early pressure produced opportunities for Turkish midfielder Arda Güler, who narrowly missed the target in the fourth minute before forcing goalkeeper Joan García into a save later in the first half. The visitors eventually broke the deadlock four minutes before halftime following a move involving winger Yan Diomande. The attacking play ended with Barcelona defender Gerard Martín attempting to clear a cross, only for the ball to strike Mbappé’s right thigh and enter the net. Although the finish involved an element of fortune, it rewarded Madrid’s willingness to attack and punished Barcelona’s inability to clear the danger inside their penalty area.

Barcelona responded almost immediately, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal finding space inside the penalty area but failing to convert a promising opportunity. The hosts struggled to establish their usual attacking rhythm during the first half, largely because of Madrid’s compact defensive structure and quick transitions. Real Madrid nearly doubled their advantage before the interval when Diomande broke through on goal, but his effort struck the side netting. The visitors entered halftime with a narrow lead, having successfully frustrated Barcelona’s attacking combinations and demonstrated the importance of organisation against a team that had dominated the opening weeks of the domestic season.

Barcelona returned after the interval with greater intensity, increasing their attacking pressure and committing more players forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Raphinha finished a move created by Pedri following a cleverly worked short corner. The Brazilian’s composed strike brought the home supporters to their feet and appeared to shift the momentum toward Flick’s team. The goal was Raphinha’s 13th in the league campaign, underlining his importance to Barcelona’s attacking performances. With the score level, the hosts pushed for a winner, hoping to maintain their unbeaten record and restore their six point advantage over Madrid.

The contest became increasingly open as both teams searched for a decisive goal. Arda Güler threatened Barcelona’s goal with a powerful effort from a difficult angle, forcing Joan García into another important save. At the opposite end, Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin produced an outstanding stop to deny Gerard Martín’s header following a corner in the 66th minute. Madrid also protested an incident involving Barcelona defender João Cancelo and Diomande, with the visitors arguing that the challenge deserved stronger disciplinary action. However, the officials allowed play to continue without the dismissal sought by Madrid, adding another contentious moment to an already intense encounter.

Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga played important roles in creating Real Madrid’s dramatic winning goal.

The decisive moment arrived in the 87th minute following a brilliant attacking move initiated by England midfielder Jude Bellingham. Collecting possession in midfield, Bellingham executed an impressive turn to escape pressure before passing to Arda Güler, who helped move the ball forward to Eduardo Camavinga. The French midfielder accelerated into the penalty area, evaded defender Pau Cubarsí and delivered a precise pass to Mbappé, who finished from close range. The goal completed the French captain’s double and brought his tally to 100 goals for Real Madrid across all competitions. Mourinho celebrated emotionally on the touchline as the visitors regained the lead with only minutes remaining.

The late winner produced contrasting emotions inside Camp Nou, with Real Madrid players celebrating enthusiastically while Barcelona struggled to respond to the setback. Mourinho’s animated reaction underlined the importance of the result for a team attempting to remain competitive against the league leaders. Barcelona pushed forward during the closing stages, but Madrid maintained their defensive organisation and successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle. The result rewarded the visitors for their resilience, disciplined defending and clinical finishing, while leaving Barcelona frustrated after a second half performance that had briefly suggested they might complete another comeback.

Real Madrid coach José Mourinho celebrates the victory that revived his team’s Spanish league title challenge.

The victory also added another memorable chapter to the historic rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona, two of European football’s most successful clubs. El Clásico has produced numerous dramatic encounters involving some of the game’s greatest players, including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. One notable historical moment came in April 2012, when Ronaldo scored the decisive goal in Madrid’s 2 to 1 victory at Camp Nou during Mourinho’s previous tenure as manager. That result helped Madrid strengthen their position in a season when they eventually secured the Spanish league title with 100 points. Mbappé’s latest performance revived memories of those defining encounters, demonstrating once again how individual brilliance can influence major championship battles.

As of October 26, 2026, Barcelona remain at the top of La Liga despite suffering their first league defeat of the season, but their lead over Real Madrid has been reduced to three points. The result has increased pressure on Flick’s side to respond positively in their forthcoming fixtures, while providing Mourinho’s team with renewed confidence in their pursuit of the championship. For Mbappé, the night represented another landmark in his Real Madrid career, combining his 100th goal for the club with a decisive performance against its greatest rival. Beyond the immediate celebrations, the outcome has transformed the early title race, confirming that the battle for Spanish football supremacy remains open after one of the most dramatic El Clásico encounters of the season.

French superstar Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid defeated archrivals FC Barcelona 2 to 1 in a dramatic El Clásico at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday, October 25, ending the Catalan club’s perfect start to the Spanish La Liga season.
