{"id":11153,"date":"2020-08-13T16:27:47","date_gmt":"2020-08-13T16:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=11153"},"modified":"2020-08-13T16:27:47","modified_gmt":"2020-08-13T16:27:47","slug":"enoch-adeboye-sexism-row-why-the-nigerian-pastor-is-so-popular","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2020\/08\/13\/enoch-adeboye-sexism-row-why-the-nigerian-pastor-is-so-popular\/","title":{"rendered":"Enoch Adeboye sexism row: Why the Nigerian pastor is so popular"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Enoch Adeboye, better known as &#8220;Daddy Go&#8221; (Daddy General Overseer), is a Nigerian pastor loved by his millions of followers, but who has once again riled critics on social media with what they say is his sexist attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 78-year-old ranks low on the flamboyance roll-call of the West African nation&#8217;s mega televangelists, but he is arguably the most popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has headed the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) for nearly 40 years &#8211; and under his stewardship it has grown phenomenally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is rare to find in Nigeria&#8217;s mainly Christian south a street without an RCCG church, some streets have two &#8211; and its dove logo has become part of the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the pastor&#8217;s views on marriage and gender roles has some eyes rolling in the age of #metoo &#8211; even in this conservative country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Marry a woman who can cook&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>He has been active on social media over the last decade &#8211; and when he posted some &#8220;lessons&#8221; for women on his wife&#8217;s birthday in July &#8211; it snowballed into a Twitter storm that sparked a big conversation about feminism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/13779\/production\/_113673797_gettyimages-459883823.jpg?w=696&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Worshipers at RCCG\"\/><figcaption>Pentecostal churches are popular in southern Nigeria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;No matter how educated or successful you are, your husband is your head and you must regard him as such at all times,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PastorEAAdeboye\/status\/1282664202193252353\">he tweeted to his 1.3 million followers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CClSeZxljZA\/?hl=en\">On Instagram he added about his wife<\/a>: &#8220;It does not matter what is on her itinerary, if I say I would like you to go with me to so and so place&#8230; she would cancel whatever she was to do and come along with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PastorEAAdeboye\/status\/1222438077660049411\">In a post in January<\/a>, he advised his married son to sack a secretary &#8220;he was looking forward to seeing at work&#8221;, which did not go down well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in 2016 he had this advice to bachelors: &#8220;Don&#8217;t marry a girl who is lazy. Don&#8217;t marry a girl who cannot cook. She needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to be eating out all the time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/485\/socialembed\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/PastorEAAdeboye\/status\/1229463155753046016~\/news\/world-africa-53488921\" alt=\"Twitter post by @PastorEAAdeboye: My sons, don\u2019t marry a lady who cannot cook. She needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to be eating out all the time.#EAA78 #LetThereBeLight3 \"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The televised address to his congregants riled women activists but his reception was not all negative &#8211; a fact borne out by the success of his church, which he runs like a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Donations to get to heaven&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every Sunday, before a ban on large gatherings because of the coronavirus, hundreds of thousand of people passed through the doors of RCCG worldwide, seeking miracles, redemption, eternal life or a financial breakthrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"604\" height=\"600\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/image-9.png?resize=604%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/image-9.png?w=604&amp;ssl=1 604w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/image-9.png?resize=300%2C298&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/image-9.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I want to be on the side of God under tutelage of a true Christian doctrine, I found this in RCCG. Personally, I want to make it to heaven,&#8221; one church member told me in the capital, Abuja, where there is a huge prayer ground on the outskirts of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others said they were attracted by Pastor Adeboye&#8217;s &#8220;holiness&#8221;, &#8220;humility&#8221; and &#8220;adherence to that which he preaches&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those flocking to church are happy to offer donations or purchase church souvenirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of them agree to give 10% of their income to the church, a practice known as tithing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Anyone who is not paying his tithe is not going to heaven, full stop,&#8221; he told his clerics two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is hard to know the true extent of Pastor Adeboye&#8217;s wealth, the lines are blurred between what belongs to the church and what is his &#8211; estimates of his fortune vary from $60m (\u00a346m) to $130m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/13902\/production\/_113903108_collage.png?w=696&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Top L_R: Pastor Adeboye with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and UK's ex-Prime Minister David Cameron. Bottom L-R: Pastor Adeboye with Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Togos' President Faure Gnassingb\u00e9\"\/><figcaption>World leaders have even been pictured with the influential pastor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This puts the former University of Lagos maths professor, who refuses to speak to the media, in the same league as the country&#8217;s music stars, and richer than most of Nigeria&#8217;s foreign-based professional footballers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But beside an array of bow ties that accompany his trademark safari suits and striped shirts, he looks austere compared to the flashy standards of his Pentecostal peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No shiny shoes, no oiled hair, his English does not rise and fall with an American accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born to poor parents, he cuts a relatively humble figure and those close to him describe him as much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, he &#8211; or the church &#8211; owns a university, a Gulfstream jet and some fancy cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neutral in politics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pastor Adeboye is also politically powerful &#8211; and well respected by middle class urbanised Nigerians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>1942: Born in Ifewara, Osun state, south-west Nigeria<\/li><li>1967: Obtained bachelors degree in mathematics<\/li><li>1967: Married Foluke Adeyokunnu<\/li><li>1977: Ordained a pastor in RCCG<\/li><li>1981: Becomes general overseer of RCCG<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In presidential election campaigns, some candidates have made it their duty to visit his prayer sessions and to be seen praying and shaking hands with him &#8211; and his website has photos of him greeting world leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His views on women &#8211; in which he often references the bible &#8211; are seen by some as unsurprising, even if some say the verses themselves can be interpreted in other ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Christianity and religions are the enforcers of patriarchy, so it&#8217;s not far-fetched that a religious leader would be holding on such a view,&#8221; Martha Edem, a Christian Nigerian writer, told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She described his &#8220;birthday tweets&#8221; as a missed opportunity to teach couples mutual respect and love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even some gender activists in the deeply religious country do not want to take him on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For me it is down to the individual interpretation\u2026 I can&#8217;t judge a man of God, Christianity is a religion of conviction,&#8221; gender activist and academic Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wealth of Nigeria&#8217;s mega pastors often make them a soft target for those who perceive them as exploitative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some suggest Pastor Adeboye should use his influence more with politicians &#8211; after all even the current Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is an RCCG pastor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be fair, he led a peaceful march in February to highlight the insecurity in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has shown he is measured about his involvement in politics &#8211; not siding with one party or another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But those expecting him to be more neutral about his views on marriage and a woman&#8217;s role in the home, will have to wait a long time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enoch Adeboye, better known as &#8220;Daddy Go&#8221; (Daddy General Overseer), is a Nigerian pastor loved by his millions of followers, but who has once again riled critics on social media with what they say is his sexist attitude.
