Netherlands<\/a> star Lineth Beerensteyn says she was delighted by the US\u2019 early elimination<\/a> from the Women\u2019s World Cup following Sunday\u2019s penalty shootout defeat to Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US<\/a> beat the Netherlands 2-0 in the final four years ago to win a second successive title but was halted in its quest for an unprecedented \u2018three-peat\u2019 by the Swedes in the round of 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe first moment when I heard that they were out, I was just thinking: \u2018Yes! Bye!\u2019\u201d Beerensteyn told reporters ahead of the Netherlands\u2019 quarterfinal match against Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause from the start of this tournament, they had already a really big mouth \u2013 they were talking already about the final and stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was just thinking: \u2018You first have to show it on the pitch before you are talking.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having previously finished on the podium of every Women\u2019s World Cup, the last-16 defeat was the US\u2019 worst ever performance at a tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two-time World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe, who has played in her last World Cup, said her penalty miss was \u201clike a sick joke,\u201d while teammate Julie Ertz said the defeat \u201cabsolutely sucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US squad looked well below its best from the beginning of the tournament. The hard-fought 3-0 win over Vietnam in its opener was as good as it got for a US team that failed to win another game for the rest of the World Cup, including a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am not being rude in that way,\u201d Beerensteyn added. \u201cI mean, I have still a lot of respect for them, but now, they are out of the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor them, it\u2019s a thing that they have to take with them in the future \u2013 don\u2019t start to talk about something that\u2019s far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
