{"id":12350,"date":"2023-09-04T13:10:49","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T13:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=12350"},"modified":"2023-09-04T13:10:51","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T13:10:51","slug":"zimbabwes-president-mnangagwa-sworn-in-after-disputed-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/04\/zimbabwes-president-mnangagwa-sworn-in-after-disputed-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe\u2019s President Mnangagwa sworn in after disputed polls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Zimbabwe\u2019s President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in for a second five-year term Monday, a week after <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/26\/africa\/zimbabwe-emmerson-mnangagwa-reelected-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">securing an absolute majority in a disputed presidential vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 80-year-old Mnangagwa took the reins of power for another term in a colorful ceremony attended by thousands of Zimbabweans and regional leaders including the presidents of South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mnangagwa was reelected after winning more than 2 million votes &#8211; 52.6% of the total ballots &#8211; to defeat his main challenger, Nelson Chamisa of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, who received 44% of the votes, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZECzim\/status\/1695559127118807092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chamisa\u2019s party rejected the results, alleging electoral fraud, and called for fresh elections. The hotly contested poll was also criticized by observers, who said the election process fell short of many regional and international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eom-zimbabwe-2023\/curtailed-rights-and-lack-level-playing-field-compounded-intimidation-election-day-largely-calm-0_en?s=410326&amp;fbclid=IwAR2t8rPHqnT7wYelX8uoQG5G5eXqLktlEeoK5Q-mAYBVYiS7GG5rXYKFauk_aem_Acoe8yMEdfSBfdqiMPARsFIauy0Ao4U8H4b_dpPpGrnjWgOKW-byKiv-RbeB3qJ2EEA&amp;mibextid=9R9pXO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preliminary report<\/a>, the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) said \u201cfundamental freedoms were increasingly curtailed\u201d during the elections, and that \u201cacts of violence and intimidation\u201d resulting in a \u201cclimate of fear\u201d were also witnessed during the polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 41 election monitors were <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PoliceZimbabwe\/status\/1694741483570557064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrested by Zimbabwe\u2019s police<\/a>, ahead of the final tally of the votes, for allegedly coordinating the release of results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arrests had followed the release of a report by the Zimbabwe NGO Forum that documented irregularities on polling day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.zw\/2023\/08\/zimbabwe-elections-marred-by-arbitrary-arrests-and-fears-of-internet-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Amnesty International<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opposition CCC party told CNN on Monday it will not challenge Mnangagwa\u2019s victory at the courts, because it is unsure of getting justice through the country\u2019s legal system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur courts are compromised \u2026 it\u2019s pointless to seek remedy in a lopsided court,\u201d said CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are challenging the results politically and diplomatically,\u201d Mkwananzi added. \u201cWe are calling for a fresh, free and fair election \u2026 We\u2019ll be applying pressure at the diplomatic level and also locally in the country, in which we are saying the citizens must insist that their votes must be respected, and their votes must count.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The August 23 vote was the second election in Zimbabwe since authoritarian leader Robert Mugabe was deposed by the military in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mnangagwa, nicknamed \u201cThe Crocodile,\u201d succeeded Mugabe after helping to orchestrate the coup that ousted him<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zimbabwe\u2019s President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in for a second five-year term Monday, a week after securing an absolute majority in a disputed presidential vote.
