Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that she and husband Will Smith have been living \u201ccompletely separate lives\u201d since 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a clip<\/a> from her forthcoming NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith said the couple had not previously gone public with their separation because they were not \u201cready yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were \u201cstill trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do we present that to people?\u201d she told Kotb. \u201cWe hadn\u2019t figured that out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pinkett Smith, 52, and Smith, 55, have been married since 1997. Pinkett Smith said they are not legally divorced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their marriage has come under scrutiny during the period she says they have been apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2020, singer August Alsina revealed that he had been romantically involved with Pinkett Smith, something she confirmed <\/a>during an episode with her husband on \u201cRed Table Talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI got into an entanglement with August,\u201d Pinkett Smith said at the time, explaining then that the superstar couple \u201cwere going through a very difficult time\u201d when it occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there was the Oscars slap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a new interview with People<\/a>, Pinkett Smith opened up about the incident, which she said, like many other people, she initially thought was a comedic bit between the two men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought, \u2018This is a skit.\u2019 I was like, \u2018There\u2019s no way that Will hit him,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn\u2019t a skit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She told the publication that as soon as they were alone she asked Smith, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pinkett Smith told Kotb during their interview that the marriage fractured because of \u201ca lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think by the time we got to 2016, we we both just exhausted with trying,\u201d Pinkett Smith said. \u201cI think we were both kind of still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said she \u201cmade a promise\u201d that there would never be a reason for her and Smith to divorce \u201cand I just haven\u2019t been able to break that promise,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pinkett Smith reveals more about her marriage, career and early life in her forthcoming memoir, \u201cWorthy.\u201d The book releases Oct. 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
