{"id":12488,"date":"2023-10-19T11:22:33","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T11:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=12488"},"modified":"2023-10-19T11:22:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T11:22:35","slug":"cant-stay-silent-any-more-rage-in-lebanon-over-israels-war-on-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/19\/cant-stay-silent-any-more-rage-in-lebanon-over-israels-war-on-gaza\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Can\u2019t stay silent any more\u2019: Rage in Lebanon over Israel\u2019s war on Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Beirut, Lebanon \u2013<\/strong> Protesters, waving Palestinian and Lebanese party flags, threw rocks, water bottles and firecrackers at the security barricade, constructed on the road leading to the United States Embassy in a northern suburb of Beirut on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Security forces responded with tear gas that pushed the protesters back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overlooking the protest from the periphery, a 20-year-old Palestinian man from Nahr el-Bared, a refugee camp near the city of Tripoli in north Lebanon, rubbed his eyes. He had just come back from the front of the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to go inside and \u2018kharreb el-dineh\u2019,\u201d he said, using an expression that means \u2018to cause havoc\u2019 but literally translates to \u2018destroy the world\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"390\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-17.png?resize=696%2C390\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-17.png?w=950&amp;ssl=1 950w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-17.png?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-17.png?resize=768%2C431&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-17.png?resize=696%2C390&amp;ssl=1 696w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-17.png?resize=749%2C420&amp;ssl=1 749w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came to protest here because America is supporting Israel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically at war, Lebanon and Israel have no diplomatic relations. Instead, thousands of protesters rallied at the US embassy on Wednesday, calling for an end to hostilities as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2023\/10\/18\/israel-hamas-war-live-limited-gaza-aid-deal-agreed-between-us-and-egypt\">a potential Israeli ground invasion looms<\/a> over Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protesters waved Palestinian and Lebanese party flags \u2013 including that of Hezbollah, who had called for \u201ca day of unprecedented anger\u201d ahead of the demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protesters travelled by bus, car and motorised scooter, and came from all over Lebanon to express their rage at what they consider Washington\u2019s unflinching backing of Israel and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2023\/10\/18\/could-a-warning-by-the-icc-chief-prosecutor-deter-war-crimes-in-gaza\">war crimes in Gaza.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US sends $3.8bn in annual military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/10\/11\/how-big-is-israels-military-and-how-much-funding-does-it-get-from-the-us\">aid<\/a> to Israel and has historically supported their ally in the Middle East, regardless of which political party is in the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indignation was palpable among the protesters on Wednesday, coming a day after an explosion at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/10\/18\/second-day-of-protests-across-the-middle-east-after-gaza-hospital-strike\">al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza<\/a> killed an estimated 500 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"390\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-18.png?resize=696%2C390\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-18.png?w=962&amp;ssl=1 962w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-18.png?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-18.png?resize=768%2C430&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-18.png?resize=696%2C390&amp;ssl=1 696w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-18.png?resize=750%2C420&amp;ssl=1 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>US President Joe Biden said he thought the attack was \u201cdone by the other team\u201d, in a face-to-face meeting with Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while on a whirlwind trip to Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 3,300, a third of them children, have died from Israeli bombing since October 7, when a&nbsp;Hamas attack on southern Israel left around 1,400 people dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But many protesters said their fury was not about the al-Ahli hospital attack alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are here for yesterday [\u2018s attack] but also for the years before,\u201d Ahmad, 43, from the Palestinian refugee camp of Burj el-Barajneh, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKill Hamas, but don\u2019t kill civilians,\u201d Ahmad said, sitting on his Palestinian-flag-decorated motorized scooter with his two sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf any foreigner hits a dog, he goes to the international court, but when [Israelis attack Palestinians], nothing happens,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"anywhere-they-are-protesting-america-i-ll-be-there\">\u2018Anywhere they are protesting America, I\u2019ll be there\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The protesters\u2019 sense of indignity comes as Palestinians feel the international community has ignored their suffering and as Israeli government officials have used dehumanising language, calling Palestinian people \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/program\/newsfeed\/2023\/10\/9\/israeli-defence-minister-orders-complete-siege-on-gaza\">human animals<\/a>\u201d and \u201cchildren of darkness\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ahmad spoke, protesters wearing Palestinian-patterned keffiyehs, sat on top of the security-constructed barricade to keep demonstrators from nearing the US Embassy, in the northern town of Awkar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some threw rocks or water bottles over the fence at Lebanese security forces, who in turn responded with water cannons and waves of tear gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are around 210,000 Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, according to UNICEF. Most live between the country\u2019s handful of refugee camps because they are barred from owning property and banned from accessing formal education or holding many jobs in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Support for the Palestinian cause has traditionally come from the Lebanese left, who fought alongside Palestinian groups during Lebanon\u2019s civil war. Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/10\/17\/beyond-hezbollah-the-history-of-tensions-between-lebanon-and-israel\">groups like Hezbollah and their allies<\/a>, the Amal Movement, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party and the Lebanese Communist Party support the Palestinian cause in rhetoric but have done little legislatively to help refugees living in dire situations in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flags from these Lebanese political parties were waved next to the Palestinian flag at the protest where some attendees were neither Palestinian nor publicly supporting a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a Lebanese Maronite and they bombed a Christian hospital,\u201d a 40-year-old man who identified himself as Abou Elias el-Hajj said from the protest\u2019s periphery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnywhere they are protesting America, I\u2019ll be there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to him stood 35-year-old Elias Sebali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat happened yesterday could happen tomorrow against Christians in Lebanon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These two men were locals from the region, but not all nearby residents were in support of the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eliane, 33, closed her minimarket just down the street from where the barricade was set up on Wednesday. As the protest was starting, she sat on the pavement in front of her store smoking a water pipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf they want to fight, we are with them, but this is not the right time or place,\u201d she said, adding that a few protesters had caused property damage and scared employees of local businesses during a protest the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have a just cause, but it\u2019s not a clever way to act,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"before-they-even-lived-they-died\">\u2018Before they even lived, they died\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Protests took place in other parts of Lebanon on Wednesday, including near the German embassy and in the southern Beirut suburb of Haret Hreik. On the road leading to the German embassy in Dekwaneh, north of Beirut, a few dozen people gathered at the start of the demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike at the US embassy, no party flags were present. Some said they came because they did not want to attend a protest with Hezbollah and their Lebanese allies, but still wanted to voice their opposition to Israel\u2019s killing of Palestinian civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about the German embassy per se,\u201d said Mohammad, 52, from Beirut. \u201cIt\u2019s about standing for what is right. When pregnant women and children are being killed, you can\u2019t stay silent any more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other protesters said the German embassy\u2019s unflinching support for Israel drew their attention, with one protester-led chant calling it the \u201cZionist embassy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many in attendance called for an end to Israel\u2019s occupation of Palestinian territories and what international rights groups such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2023\/10\/17\/the-mask-is-off-gaza-has-exposed-the-hypocrisy-of-international-law\">Amnesty International call apartheid towards Palestinians<\/a>. The most frequent call from protesters, however, was to stop the killing in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This call hit closer to home for some in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy family is alive at the moment, that\u2019s all I can say,\u201d said Zainab, 26, who is from Gaza and studying human rights and democracy at Saint Joseph\u2019s University in Beirut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common refrain among protesters was how helpless they felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the demonstrators took out their anger on the barricade blocking the road to the US embassy, a unit of Lebanese police officers stood nearby in case they needed to intervene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is happening is normal, one officer told Al Jazeera, standing near where the crowd was attacking the barricade.
