{"id":12606,"date":"2023-11-06T10:08:43","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T10:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=12606"},"modified":"2023-11-06T10:08:45","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T10:08:45","slug":"guineas-ex-junta-leader-recaptured-after-prison-break-defense-ministry-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/06\/guineas-ex-junta-leader-recaptured-after-prison-break-defense-ministry-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Guinea\u2019s ex-junta leader recaptured after prison break, defense ministry says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The former head of Guinea\u2019s 2008 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/03\/africa\/one-killed-guinea-protest-intl\/index.html\">military junta<\/a>, Moussa Dadis Camara, has been recaptured following his escape from prison on Saturday, Guinea\u2019s Ministry of Defense announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camara was sprung from prison by heavily armed men in Conakry in the early hours of Saturday along with three other high-ranking officers, Justice Minister Charles Wright said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the three high-ranking officers \u2014&nbsp;Moussa Tiegboro Camara and Blaise Gomou \u2014 have also been recaptured, according to the Ministry of Defense. The third officer, Colonel Claude Pivi, remains at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The escapees that were recaptured are \u201csafe and sound,\u201d the Ministry of Defense said, and have been sent back to Maison Centrale de Conakry, a federal prison in Guinea\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll security measures have been taken to find the last fugitive,\u201d the Ministry of Defense continued. \u201cI once again call on citizens to continue to freely go about their daily business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier Saturday, local residents told Reuters military vehicles and special forces were policing the streets of the Guinean capital after shots were heard in the Kaloum administrative district, where Camara and others were held at the Central House prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was around 05:00 a.m. (01:00 a.m. ET) that heavily armed men burst into the Central House of Conakry. They managed to leave with four defendants in the trial of the events of Sept. 28 including Captain Moussa Dadis Camara,\u201d the minister said on the radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey will be found wherever they are,\u201d he said, declining to give further details of the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guinea\u2019s borders have been closed to prevent the escapees fleeing the country, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camara and others have been on trial since last year, accused of orchestrating a stadium massacre and mass rape by Guinean security forces in which 150 people were killed during a pro-democracy rally on September 28, 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camara has denied responsibility, blaming the atrocities on errant soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents near Kaloum said shots were first heard around 04:00 a.m. local time (12:00 a.m. ET) after which security was tightened on the streets and the entrance to Kaloum was blocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By late morning, the capital appeared calm with many soldiers still visible in some areas, ordering people to stay at home, Mmah Camara, a resident of Tombo district, said by phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guinea is governed by military leader Mamady Doumbouya, who took power in a coup in 2021 &#8211; one of eight in West and Central Africa in the last three years.
