Nigerian singer and songwriter, Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has shared her thoughts on the growing trend of established artistes launching record labels to sign upcoming talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a recent interview with media personality VJ Adams, Simi expressed concerns that many established musicians sign new acts as a personal achievement rather than out of genuine commitment to their growth. According to her, signing an artist should not be treated as a mere milestone or side project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can sign an artist, but I think that it\u2019s not fair when an artist signs another artist just as a milestone,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause for that artist, it\u2019s just a passion project for them and not necessarily to accomplish a goal. But then, that\u2019s their life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She emphasized that only individuals who are genuinely passionate about the music business should venture into managing other artists. For her, being responsible for another musician\u2019s career requires more than fame or influence\u2014it demands consistency, belief, and long-term dedication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo that whether or not the artist is thriving at the moment, they will still believe in the artist. Whether or not the song that you thought would blow did not blow, are you willing to keep going?\u201d she asked. \u201cThat\u2019s actually somebody\u2019s life. That\u2019s their dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reflecting on her own journey, Simi recalled questioning the motives of those who once signed her. \u201cHow do you see me? Am I just a box you are ticking, or is it as important to you as it is to me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While she acknowledged she has the capacity to sign and mentor a rising star, Simi admitted she isn\u2019t sure she possesses the passion and energy required to fully commit to such a demanding responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
