The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to launch a thorough investigation into the incident involving Fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, and domestic airline ValueJet. The incident occurred on August 5, 2025, when KWAM 1 allegedly attempted to board a ValueJet flight with a suspicious liquid substance, later confirmed to be alcohol.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the NCAA to place KWAM 1 on a no-fly list, warning that any airline that fails to comply with the directive risks having its operating license withdrawn. Keyamo’s directive comes after the NCAA’s swift action to uphold aviation safety standards and ensure accountability, regardless of the parties involved.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has backed Keyamo’s position, describing the issue as a major threat to flight safety. AON spokesperson Obiora Okonkwo warned that it is no longer business as usual, as all member airlines are prepared to take decisive action to protect their crew and passengers, and aircraft. Okonkwo emphasized that the situation now poses serious threats to flight safety, citing cases of unruly passengers destroying aircraft and threatening the safety of workers and air movement.
The NCAA has emphasized the importance of upholding aviation safety standards and ensuring accountability, regardless of the parties involved. The authority has called for a comprehensive criminal investigation and the initiation of appropriate prosecution in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Civil Aviation regulations (Nig. CARs) 2023 and all other applicable laws. The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt Chris Najomo, has also issued an advisory to the Airline Operators of Nigeria, urging the immediate consideration and institution of a No-Fly List for KWAM 1 on any commercial flight.
The Director of Aviation Security at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Igbafe Afegbai, explained that KWAM 1 had passed through the initial security checks without issue but later purchased alcohol at the airport lounge and allegedly attempted to board the aircraft with it. Afegbai denied ever calling or apologizing to the music star for whatever reason, stating that KWAM 1 was argumentative and uncooperative when questioned about the contents of his flask.
Industry experts have condemned FAAN security, describing KWAM 1’s action as a crime that should be punished.
