A devastating plane crash occurred near the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least six people and seriously injuring two others. The medical light aircraft, operated by Amref Flying Doctors, took off from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport at 2:17 pm local time, bound for Somaliland, when it crashed into a small residential block in Ruiru, Kiambu County, shortly after 3:00 pm.
According to eyewitnesses, the plane started burning while in the air before it hurtled down into the small community, causing widespread destruction and chaos. Residents described the scene as horrific, with body parts littered all over the area. The impact of the crash also caused significant damage to the residential block, with one resident, Margaret Wairimu, losing everything in the incident.
Kiambu County commissioner, Henry Wafula, confirmed the death toll, stating that four people on the plane and two people on the ground had lost their lives. Two others on the ground were seriously injured and received medical attention. Huge crowds gathered at the scene, as rescuers and first responders worked to pick through the scattered debris. The rescue efforts were closely monitored by the local authorities, who were focused on providing support to those affected by the tragedy.
Amref Flying Doctors CEO, Stephen Gitau, confirmed that one of their aircraft, a Cessna Citation XLS, had been involved in the fatal accident. Gitau expressed the company’s concern for the safety and well-being of those on board and promised to provide further information as it is confirmed. The incident has raised concerns about aviation safety and the need for thorough investigations into such incidents.
