{"id":18050,"date":"2025-09-05T09:00:30","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T09:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=18050"},"modified":"2025-09-05T09:00:33","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T09:00:33","slug":"video-at-least-60-dead-after-boat-sinks-in-nigeria-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/05\/video-at-least-60-dead-after-boat-sinks-in-nigeria-officials-say\/","title":{"rendered":"[VIDEO] At least 60 dead after boat sinks in Nigeria, officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">At least 60 people have died and dozens more have been rescued after a boat carrying more than 100 passengers capsized in Nigeria\u2019s north-central Niger State, according to local officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The vessel departed from the town of Tungan Sule in Malale district at about 11am local time (10:00 GMT) on Tuesday morning, and was heading towards the town of Dugga on Nigeria\u2019s Kainji reservoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) said on Wednesday that the incident occurred when a vessel struck a submerged tree stump near the Gausawa community in Borgu Local Government Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe cause was attributed to overloading and collision with a tree stump,\u201d the agency told local newspaper, Daily Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">NSEMA said women and children were on board the vessel, which it said was heading to Dugga for a \u201ccondolence visit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Abdullahi Baba Ara, NSEMA\u2019s director general and chair of Borgu Local Government Area, said the number of casualties was still rising while rescue operations were continuing \u201cfor possible recovery of missing persons\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Search and rescue underway for over 40 missing after boat capsizes in Nigeria\u2019s Sokoto\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t9XprLIke4U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe death toll of the boat incident has risen to 60,\u201d he told the Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTen people have been found in serious condition, and many are still being sought,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sa\u2019adu Inuwa Muhammad, the district head of Shagumi, who was at the scene shortly after the accident occurred, said the boat was carrying \u201cmore than 100 people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe were able to recover 31 corpses from the river. The boat was also recovered and removed,\u201d he told Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Women and children made up the majority of the deceased, Muhammad said.
