The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has summoned 13 domestic airlines operating within the country to an emergency meeting following a surge in flight delays and cancellations that have continued to frustrate air travelers nationwide. The regulatory body said the move is part of efforts to address mounting passenger complaints and restore discipline within the aviation sector.
Confirming the development in a statement on Tuesday, NCAA\u2019s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, disclosed that the meeting is scheduled to hold on Wednesday at the authority\u2019s headquarters in Abuja. He noted that the summons became necessary after widespread dissatisfaction from passengers and a disturbing rise in disorderly conduct at airports.
According to Achimugu, the NCAA has been inundated with reports of airlines failing to comply with operational and consumer protection guidelines, leading to frequent disruptions in flight schedules. He added that the authority will use the meeting to hold airlines accountable and demand strict adherence to aviation regulations designed to safeguard passengers\u2019 rights.
In recent weeks, there has been an increase in incidents of unruly passenger behavior at major Nigerian airports, with some travelers resorting to violence and confrontation in response to abrupt cancellations and prolonged delays. The NCAA said while such acts are unacceptable, the root causes often stem from poor communication and inadequate service delivery by some domestic carriers.
Passenger rights groups and aviation analysts have repeatedly called for stronger oversight in the sector, stressing that consistent delays not only inconvenience travelers but also damage the reputation of Nigeria\u2019s aviation industry. They argue that airlines must improve transparency in their operations and provide timely updates and alternatives whenever disruptions occur.
Industry observers believe the NCAA\u2019s intervention could serve as a turning point if the regulator backs its words with decisive sanctions against defaulting operators. They emphasize that only firm action will compel airlines to prioritize efficiency, better scheduling, and customer service in line with global best practices.
The NCAA, however, assured passengers that it remains committed to ensuring safe, reliable, and consumer-friendly air travel in Nigeria.
