{"id":18756,"date":"2025-09-16T08:06:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T08:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=18756"},"modified":"2025-09-16T09:23:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T09:23:08","slug":"trump-says-hes-bringing-15-billion-lawsuit-against-new-york-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/16\/trump-says-hes-bringing-15-billion-lawsuit-against-new-york-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Says He\u2019s Bringing $15 Billion Lawsuit Against New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">President Donald Trump filed a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing the paper of serving as a \u201cmouthpiece\u201d for the Democrats and pitting himself against one of the world\u2019s oldest and most prominent news organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the lawsuit, Trump criticized the Times\u2019 \u201cderanged\u201d endorsement of former presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, saying it was featured prominently on the paper\u2019s front page and included a \u201chyperbolic\u201d opening line that it\u2019s \u201chard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States than Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a Truth Social post announcing the suit, Trump accused the paper of a \u201cdecades long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The amount he\u2019s seeking exceeds the market capitalization of The New York Times Co., which currently stands at about $9.65 Billion.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.msn.com\/staticsb\/statics\/latest\/views\/icons\/textExpand_filled.svg\" alt=\"Expand article logo\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The case, filed in federal court in Tampa, Florida, cites the Times\u2019 news and opinion articles as well as the 2024 book&nbsp;<em>Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father\u2019s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success<\/em>, written by two of the paper\u2019s reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In addition to the newspaper company, defendants include reporters Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker and Michael S. Schmidt, as well as publisher Penguin Random House LLC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The filing describes the Times editorial approach as \u201cone of industrial-scale defamation and libel against political opponents.\u201d The paper didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment outside of regular business hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Media Lawsuits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The case adds to Trump\u2019s running battles with the press since returning to the presidency. In July, he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-18\/trump-sues-dow-jones-rupert-murdoch-for-libel-in-us-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sued<\/a>&nbsp;Dow Jones &amp; Co., News Corp. and Rupert Murdoch for libel, seeking $10 billion in damages after the Wall Street Journal published a story alleging that Trump once sent a suggestive birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein. House Democrats later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-08\/epstein-letter-allegedly-from-trump-released-by-house-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a>&nbsp;the alleged birthday note as part of a trove of documents received by the House Oversight Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Trump reached a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-02\/paramount-settles-trump-s-60-minutes-suit-for-16-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">settlement<\/a>&nbsp;with Paramount Global in July over a lawsuit tied to CBS news network\u2019s&nbsp;<em>60 Minutes&nbsp;<\/em>interview with then-Vice President Harris. In December, ABC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-12-14\/abc-settles-trump-defamation-case-with-a-15-million-donation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed<\/a>&nbsp;to give $15 million to Trump\u2019s future presidential foundation or museum to resolve a separate defamation claim.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But Trump has also faced setbacks, including a Manhattan judge\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-18\/trump-s-suit-against-bob-woodward-over-recordings-is-tossed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismissal<\/a>&nbsp;of his suit against journalist Bob Woodward and a publishing house over the release of interview recordings from his first term in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 2009, when Trump was still a real estate developer, he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2009-07-15\/trump-networth-libel-case-dismissed-by-nj-judge-update3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost<\/a>&nbsp;his bid for $5 billion in libel damages from Timothy O\u2019Brien, who was an editor at the Times and published a 2005 book questioning Trump\u2019s billionaire status. O\u2019Brien now oversees opinion columns for Bloomberg News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Intimidation Tactics\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">After Trump criticized Times reporters in March, the newspaper accused the president of using \u201cintimidation tactics.\u201d Trump\u2019s approach has \u201cnever caused us to back down from our mission of holding powerful people to account, regardless of which party is in office,\u201d it said at the time in a post on X.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/13\/opinion\/ag-sulzberger-free-press.html?unlocked_article_code=1.G08.d8ZF.a55CNz8vBOl-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in May that the paper will cover the Trump administration \u201cfully and fairly, regardless of what attacks it sends our way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Trump has a history of suing the media over unfavorable coverage. Under the 1964 Supreme Court case&nbsp;<em>New York Times v. Sullivan<\/em>, public figures such as Trump have a higher burden to prove libel: That the defendant knew that the statement was false or was reckless. Trump and other conservative activists have urged the Supreme Court to reconsider that decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Trump referenced the Paramount and ABC settlements in his latest post, claiming \u201clongterm INTENT and pattern of abuse, which is both unacceptable and illegal.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The case is Trump v.
