His legal team argued the trial was flawed, citing the absence of legal representation during proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe received only one day\u2019s notice before the judgment, which was delivered via Zoom. We needed time to properly study it before filing our appeal,\u201d said Kola Alapinni, Sharif-Aminu\u2019s lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe court has graciously granted our request and ordered an accelerated hearing. We will file the appeal next week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The defence also challenged the constitutionality of sections of Kano State\u2019s sharia, or Islamic law, that prescribe capital punishment and amputation, arguing they conflict with Nigeria\u2019s secular constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Lamido Abba Sorondinki, counsel for the Kano State government, defended the original verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe applicant made blasphemous statements against the Holy Prophet, which the government of Kano State will not condone,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf the Supreme Court upholds the lower court\u2019s decision, we will execute him publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s Supreme Court on Thursday granted lawyers representing Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, a musician sentenced to death for alleged blasphemy, permission to file an appeal outside the legally prescribed timeframe.
