Authorities in Nigeria\u2019s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested 12 individuals suspected of involvement in a violent robbery that claimed the lives of a journalist and a security guard. The victims, Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu of Arise News and Barnabas Danlami, were killed during a pre-dawn attack on September 29, 2025, at Unique Apartments in Gishiri Village, Katampe District, Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrests were carried out by the Scorpion Squad, a tactical unit under the FCT Police Command, following a directive from the Commissioner of Police. The operation was based on forensic intelligence provided by Giga Forensics, a subsidiary of EIB STRATOC, which specializes in digital and reconstructive crime analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to police reports, the suspects were tracked using mobile devices stolen from the crime scene. Four of the accused were apprehended shortly after the incident, and their confessions helped identify additional members of the gang. The suspects reportedly received \u20a6200,000 each from the proceeds of the robbery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those arrested are individuals from various regions across northern Nigeria, including Katsina, Kaduna, and Borno states. The list includes Shamsudeen Hassan, Hassan Isah, Abubakar Alkamu (alias Abba), and Sani Sirajo (alias Dan Borume), among others. One female suspect, Sumayya Mohammed (alias Baby), was also named among the accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police recovered a cache of weapons from the suspects, including a fabricated AK-47 rifle, a locally made pistol, a pump-action shotgun, and 36 rounds of live ammunition. Additional items seized include mobile phones belonging to the victims, sharp knives, a cutlass, and torchlights used during the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One suspect, Shamsudeen Hassan, allegedly confessed to shooting the security guard when he attempted to block the gang\u2019s entry into the apartment complex. Another, Sani Sirajo, claimed he tried to prevent Maduagwu from falling off a three-storey building during the chaos but was overwhelmed by her weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remaining suspects were intercepted en route to another planned robbery in the upscale Maitama district of Abuja. Police say all 12 individuals have confessed to their roles in the crime, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend any remaining accomplices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident has sparked outrage within Nigeria\u2019s media community, with calls for greater protection of journalists and civilians. Arise News described the loss of Maduagwu as a tragedy and praised the swift response by law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
