In a candid interview, actor and activist Michael J. Fox opened up about his long battle with Parkinson\u2019s disease and his thoughts on mortality. Diagnosed at age 29 in 1991, Fox has lived with the neurodegenerative condition for more than three decades, becoming one of its most prominent public advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are not many people who have had Parkinson\u2019s for 35 years,\u201d Fox said. \u201cI\u2019d like to just not wake up one day. That\u2019d be really cool. I don\u2019t want it to be dramatic. I don\u2019t want to trip over furniture, smash my head\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox described Parkinson\u2019s as \u201cmysterious and enigmatic,\u201d noting that unlike other illnesses such as cancer, there is no clear progression or timeline. \u201cIt\u2019s not like you go through stages. It\u2019s different for everyone,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recently released a memoir titled Future Boy<\/em>, which reflects on his life, career, and experiences with the disease. Fox\u2019s reflections on death come after years of physical hardship. He has suffered multiple fractures and undergone surgeries related to the disease\u2019s impact on his mobility. \u201cWalking is a bit dangerous,\u201d he admitted in a separate interview, adding that he tries to avoid unnecessary movement to prevent injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his journey, Fox has remained committed to Parkinson\u2019s research and advocacy. He founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, which has since become the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson\u2019s research in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
