ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) \u2014 Nigeria\u2019s Senate on Thursday began screening Prof. Joash Amupitan, the nominee for chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in a session closely watched by political observers and civil society groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Dean of Law at the University of Jos, arrived at the National Assembly accompanied by Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo and other dignitaries. He was ushered into the chamber by Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Abubakar Lado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senate President Godswill Akpabio welcomed Amupitan and his family, commending their presence before outlining the procedures for the confirmation hearing. The screening commenced shortly before 1 p.m. local time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Bola Tinubu nominated Amupitan earlier this week to succeed outgoing INEC chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who resigned from the role. The nomination was formally read on the Senate floor during Tuesday\u2019s plenary session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His nomination has generated mixed reactions, with some civil society organizations expressing concern over INEC\u2019s independence and urging lawmakers to scrutinize his political affiliations and reform agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If confirmed, Amupitan will oversee preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and play a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observers say the leadership transition at INEC comes at a critical time, as Nigeria faces growing demands for electoral credibility and public trust in democratic institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
