AWKA, Nigeria (FN)<\/strong> \u2014 The Anambra State government has denied allegations circulating online that Governor Chukwuma Soludo plans to arrest religious leaders, including Catholic bishops, if re-elected in the upcoming gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The claims, widely shared on social media platforms, suggest that Soludo intends to target clerics and traditional spiritual figures following the November 8 vote. The state government described the reports as false and politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement issued Tuesday, Commissioner for Information Dr. Law Mefor said the allegations were designed to incite unrest and distract voters. He accused opposition groups of resorting to misinformation due to weak campaign strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe story alleging that Governor Soludo will arrest Catholic bishops and priests is entirely fabricated,\u201d Mefor said. \u201cIt is a calculated attempt to sow discord and undermine public trust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commissioner emphasized that Soludo respects the constitutional rights of all citizens, including freedom of religion and expression. He urged residents to verify information before sharing inflammatory content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mefor also addressed concerns about the governor\u2019s stance on traditional spiritual practices. He clarified that the administration\u2019s crackdown targets fraudulent individuals posing as native doctors or spiritual leaders, not legitimate religious figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement referenced the government\u2019s ongoing efforts to eliminate fake titleholders and spiritual impostors, which have contributed to the rise of the term \u201cOso Soludo\u201d \u2014 a phrase used to describe the crackdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anambra authorities said they are working with federal agencies to investigate certificate forgery and other forms of identity fraud linked to religious and traditional institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting civil liberties during the election period. Officials called on the public to reject divisive rhetoric and focus on credible political discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
