He explained that the decision followed renewed engagements with the Federal Government and key interventions from the National Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The union had declared the warning strike on October 13, 2025, citing the government\u2019s failure to respond to repeated appeals to resolve the protracted renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and other welfare-related concerns of academic staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-230.png?fit=640%2C360\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-230.png?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-230.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen we gathered here about 10 days ago to painfully declare a warning strike, it was a decision that left us with no other choice,\u201d Piwuna said. \u201cThe government had ignored our repeated overtures to address issues critical to the survival of Nigeria\u2019s public universities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Following the commencement of the strike, the Federal Government re-engaged ASUU through a team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed. Meetings held on October 16 and 18 focused on the government\u2019s response to the draft renegotiated agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While acknowledging that the discussions did not resolve all outstanding matters, Piwuna noted that significant progress had been made compared to the pre-strike period. \u201cWe have not achieved all our objectives, but we are certainly not where we were before the strike began,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He commended the intervention of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, and Labour, as well as Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, whose mediation, he said, had rekindled hope for a lasting resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">After an emergency meeting held from October 21\u201322, ASUU\u2019s National Executive Council (NEC) resolved to suspend the strike, citing its partial success in compelling the government to return to the negotiation table.
