Officers on the scene said they were acting on orders from the Commissioner of Police and insisted he accompany them to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere was no letter of invitation,\u201d Sowore reportedly told officers, demanding that his lawyer be present before he was placed in a police van and driven away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong condemned the arrest, calling it \u201cpreposterous\u201d and accusing the Tinubu administration of undermining the judiciary. \u201cThe police and the Tinubu regime are making a mockery of our judicial system,\u201d Effiong wrote on social media. \u201cHe should be freed immediately. Stop the shenanigans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-238.png?fit=474%2C316\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21878\" style=\"width:716px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-238.png?w=474&amp;ssl=1 474w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-238.png?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Other activists and public figures have also weighed in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Aisha Yesufu<\/strong>, co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, tweeted: \u201cThis is not law enforcement. This is intimidation. Sowore\u2019s arrest is a warning to every Nigerian who dares to speak out.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Yemi Adamolekun<\/strong>, Executive Director of Enough is Enough Nigeria, stated: \u201cThe arrest of peaceful observers at a court premises is unlawful and sends a chilling message to civil society.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Deji Adeyanju<\/strong>, convener of Concerned Nigerians, said: \u201cThis is a clear abuse of power. The government is using the police to harass critics and suppress dissent.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Senator Shehu Sani<\/strong>, a former lawmaker and rights advocate, posted: \u201cArresting Sowore at a court where he came to show solidarity is a tragic irony. Democracy is being bruised.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh<\/strong>, responding to media inquiries, said: \u201cMr. Sowore was invited for questioning in connection with recent activities that may have implications for public order. The process is being handled lawfully.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sowore\u2019s arrest follows his participation in a protest earlier in the week as part of the #FreeNnamdiKanu campaign, which has gained traction across Nigeria. The demonstration in Abuja on October 20 led to the arrest of Kanu\u2019s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others, who were later remanded at Kuje Prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">According to a First Information Report filed at a Chief Magistrates\u2019 Court in Kuje, the police allege that the protesters defied a court order, chanted war songs, and disrupted traffic.
