Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, and also operates TikTok in the EU, now has the opportunity to respond or make platform adjustments to avoid penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Commission officials said the platforms failed to offer researchers meaningful access to public data, hindering investigations into harmful content, including material glorifying violence against children. French Digital Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot called the report \u201ca wake-up call for global tech accountability,\u201d while Germany\u2019s Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs urged \u201cimmediate compliance or consequences.\u201d In Ireland, where Meta\u2019s European headquarters is based, officials said they would \u201cclosely monitor the company\u2019s response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the United States, the White House declined to comment directly but reiterated its support for \u201ctransparent and responsible tech governance.\u201d Meanwhile, Canadian Innovation Minister Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne said the EU\u2019s move \u201csets a precedent for democratic oversight of digital platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Users across social media expressed frustration and concern. \u201cWe deserve to know how these platforms shape our behavior,\u201d tweeted one researcher in Amsterdam. Others called for boycotts or demanded stronger privacy protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg responded in a brief statement, saying, \u201cWe\u2019re reviewing the Commission\u2019s findings and remain committed to working with regulators to improve transparency.\u201d ByteDance, TikTok\u2019s parent company, said it \u201ctakes user safety seriously and will engage constructively with EU authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The case also risks escalating political tensions. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized EU digital regulations as anti-competitive, and Zuckerberg has grown closer to Trump\u2019s political camp in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Commission\u2019s findings come amid broader concerns about child safety online. Meta is separately under investigation for allegedly exposing minors to addictive algorithms and failing to implement sufficient safeguards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Commission said its assessments aim to ensure platforms are accountable under EU law and uphold their responsibilities to users and society.
