(FN) \u2014 Officer Lauren Craven, 25, of the La Mesa Police Department, was killed Monday night while assisting victims of a crash on Interstate 8, prompting an outpouring of grief from law enforcement and the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Craven, who joined the department in February 2024, was returning from San Diego Central Jail when she encountered a collision and stopped to help. She was fatally struck by another vehicle while outside her patrol car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A law enforcement procession escorted her body to the medical examiner\u2019s office Tuesday morning. Outside La Mesa Police Headquarters, a growing memorial of flowers and candles drew mourners from across the region, including fellow officers, first responders, and residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" controls src=\"http:\/\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Police-officer-killed-in-fatal-crash-in-San-Diego.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t just lose an officer \u2014 we lost a beloved daughter, sister, girlfriend, teammate, and friend,\u201d said La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney at a news conference. \u201cLauren was a light. Her positivity was immediate and genuine\u2026 she led with compassion, courage, and professionalism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Community members described Craven as approachable and kind. \u201cShe would smile and give a little wave from her vehicle \u2014 it was a nice way to connect,\u201d said Kim Herrera, a local resident. \u201cI\u2019m just heartbroken. That\u2019s where it\u2019s hard for us. Her life was cut short.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the state Capitol to be flown at half-staff in her honor. \u201cOfficer Craven served her community with pride and dedication,\u201d he said. \u201cJennifer and I are heartbroken by her loss\u2026 May her memory never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Craven\u2019s death marks a devastating loss for the La Mesa Police Department and the wider San Diego law enforcement community.
