She told police she was trafficked from Akwa Ibom State under the false promise of a job, only to be confined in a maternity home where other pregnant girls were held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Police spokesperson <strong>Olayinka Ayanlade<\/strong> said investigators found five pregnant girls and a newborn boy at the facility. \u201cPreliminary findings indicate that the suspect sold female babies for 400,000 naira (about 270 Dollars) and males for 600,000 naira (about 400 Dollars),\u201d he said. \u201cThe victims are now in protective custody and receiving medical and psychological care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"644\" height=\"338\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-270.png?fit=644%2C338&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22355\" style=\"width:749px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-270.png?w=644&amp;ssl=1 644w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-270.png?resize=300%2C157&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ondo State Commissioner of Police <strong>Adebowale Lawal<\/strong> ordered a full investigation and pledged to prosecute everyone involved. \u201cWhat we discovered is inhumane and shocking,\u201d Lawal said. \u201cNo one should profit from another person\u2019s body or from a child\u2019s birth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The <strong>Federal Ministry of Women Affairs<\/strong> condemned the case, calling it \u201ca despicable violation of child rights.\u201d Minister <strong>Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye<\/strong> said the government is working with police and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to dismantle trafficking networks and tighten oversight of private maternity and adoption homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>NAPTIP Director-General Fatima Waziri-Azi<\/strong> described the Ondo rescue as \u201canother reminder that baby-factory crimes are spreading across Nigeria\u201d and urged communities to report suspicious facilities. \u201cThese factories thrive in silence,\u201d she said. \u201cWe cannot protect our daughters if we remain quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The incident follows several similar discoveries in recent years. In <strong>Anambra State<\/strong>, police raided a fake maternity home in August and rescued six pregnant teenagers. Earlier in <strong>Abia State<\/strong>, officers freed 16 women and eight children from a baby-selling ring that trafficked infants to buyers across southern Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Human-rights advocates say poverty, unemployment and the stigmatization of single mothers drive vulnerable girls into the hands of traffickers. Activist <strong>Grace Okoro<\/strong>, who works with a women\u2019s shelter in Lagos, said many victims \u201cbelieve they\u2019re getting domestic jobs until they find themselves imprisoned and forced to sell their babies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe real tragedy,\u201d she added, \u201cis that these girls are treated as commodities, not as children themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Police said efforts are ongoing to track down additional suspects and potential buyers linked to the Ondo operation.
