{"id":22468,"date":"2025-10-28T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T07:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=22468"},"modified":"2025-10-27T19:17:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T18:17:20","slug":"nigeria-un-call-on-journalists-to-champion-childrens-rights-in-reporting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/28\/nigeria-un-call-on-journalists-to-champion-childrens-rights-in-reporting\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria, UN Call on Journalists to Champion Children\u2019s Rights in Reporting."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">IBADAN, Nigeria (FN) \u2014 The Nigerian government, in partnership with the United Nations Education Trust Fund, has called on media organizations and journalists to uphold ethical standards in reporting on children, emphasizing the media\u2019s role in protecting the rights and dignity of the nation\u2019s youngest citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Speaking at a two-day training on ethical journalism and children\u2019s rights reporting in Ibadan, Oyo State, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Ogbodo Nnam, said the government is committed to building a media culture that safeguards children\u2019s identities and promotes responsible storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Represented by Temitoye Falayi, head of the ministry\u2019s Child Rights Information Bureau, Nnam said the training was designed to help journalists reflect on their ethical obligations, explore best practices in reporting on children\u2019s issues, and deepen their understanding of child rights as outlined in national laws and international conventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe media holds immense power \u2014 the power to inform, to inspire, and to hold institutions accountable,\u201d Nnam said. \u201cBut with that power comes a profound responsibility: to report with integrity, sensitivity, and respect for human dignity. When it comes to stories involving children, that responsibility becomes even greater.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He added that the Federal Government recognizes the media as a strategic partner in its child protection agenda and is working to institutionalize ethical reporting frameworks across all platforms. \u201cWe are not just training journalists; we are building a coalition of advocates who will help shape a safer, more inclusive narrative for Nigerian children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In her keynote address, Celine Lafoucriere, Chief of UNICEF\u2019s Lagos Field Office, stressed that ethical reporting on children is not only a professional obligation but a moral imperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAt UNICEF, we believe that every child has the right to be seen, heard, and protected,\u201d Lafoucriere said. \u201cIt is about ensuring that children are portrayed with dignity, that their stories are told with care, and that their rights are never compromised in the pursuit of headlines or profit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">She urged journalists to leave the training with not only new skills but a renewed commitment to champion ethical reporting in their newsrooms and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe way we report on children today shapes the kind of society we build tomorrow,\u201d she said. \u201cBy choosing ethics, you choose protection, you choose dignity, and you choose a better future for every child in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Federal Government to strengthen child protection systems and ensure that media coverage contributes positively to the well-being and development of children across the country.
