ABEOKUTA, Nigeria (FN) \u2014 Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has awarded Nigeria\u2019s national women\u2019s football team, the Super Falcons, a N50 million (62,000 Dollars) cash gift in recognition of their achievements and to motivate them ahead of their Women\u2019s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement was made during the team\u2019s courtesy visit to the governor\u2019s office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Monday. The reception came ahead of the second-leg fixture of the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers, scheduled to be held at the MKO Abiola International Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Abiodun praised the team\u2019s discipline and historic success, including their record 10th continental title won in Morocco. \u201cWhat the Falcons represent goes far beyond football,\u201d he said. \u201cThey embody leadership, teamwork, and discipline. Through their example, millions of young Nigerians\u2014especially girls\u2014see what\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor also highlighted Ogun State\u2019s investment in sports infrastructure, including plans to transform the stadium into a world-class sports hub with a hotel, cinema, and shopping complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie expressed gratitude for the gesture. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about the money\u2014it\u2019s about feeling seen and supported. This kind of recognition gives us the extra push to fight harder on the pitch,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forward Rasheedat Ajibade echoed the sentiment, calling the reward \u201ca powerful message to every female athlete in Nigeria.\u201d She added, \u201cWe\u2019re proud to represent our country, and gestures like this remind us that our efforts matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Team captain Onome Ebi said the visit was \u201ca morale booster\u201d and praised the governor\u2019s commitment to youth and sports development. \u201cWe\u2019ve played in many stadiums, but knowing that Ogun State is investing in facilities and in us makes this match even more special,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials present at the event commended the governor\u2019s support, noting that such incentives are critical for sustaining excellence in women\u2019s football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Super Falcons defeated Benin Republic 2\u20130 in the first leg and are expected to seal qualification with a strong performance in Abeokuta. The team remains Africa\u2019s most decorated women\u2019s football side, and their continued dominance has made them a symbol of national pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
