(FN) \u2014 A former sheriff\u2019s deputy in Illinois was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder in the 2024 shooting death of Sonya Massey, a woman who had called 911 to report a possible prowler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sean Grayson, who was fired from the Sangamon County Sheriff\u2019s Office following the incident, was found guilty after a weeklong trial. Jurors deliberated for two days before returning the verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Massey, 36, was shot in her home on July 6, 2024, after she reportedly turned off a stove burner and moved a pot of boiling water to the sink. Body camera footage released after the shooting showed Grayson repeatedly ordering her to drop the pot before stepping around the counter and firing his weapon. Another deputy was present during the encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 640 \/ 360;\" width=\"640\" controls src=\"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/video-of-Masseys-Death.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Grayson claimed he feared Massey intended to throw the boiling water at him. The footage, however, drew widespread criticism and prompted calls for accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented Massey\u2019s family, said the video contradicted Grayson\u2019s defense. \u201cThere was no justification for what happened,\u201d Crump said. \u201cSonya Massey should be alive today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Massey\u2019s father, James Wilburn, also rejected the explanation. \u201cMy daughter called for help, and instead she was killed,\u201d Wilburn said. \u201cNo parent should have to endure this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The family later reached a 10 million Dollars civil settlement with Sangamon County in connection to Massey\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Grayson faces between four and 20 years in prison under Illinois law.
