White House spokesperson Emily Vaughn said the administration is \u201ccommitted to honoring the legacy of the White House while improving its utility for official functions.\u201d She declined to comment on whether a formal environmental or historical impact review had been initiated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The East Wing currently houses offices for the first lady and other White House staff. It was added in 1942 during Franklin D. Roosevelt\u2019s presidency and is considered a key component of the building\u2019s modern layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poll also revealed that strong support for the project peaks among those who strongly approve of Trump\u2019s presidency, with 58% backing the demolition. In contrast, 82% of strong Trump disapprovers strongly oppose it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preservationists warn that the proposal could open the door to future structural changes based on political whims. \u201cIf this goes forward, what\u2019s next?\u201d said historian Dr. Lena Caldwell. \u201cThe White House is not a personal estate \u2014 it\u2019s a symbol of democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
