Sanh and Quang attempted to save him in a small boat, but it capsized in the typhoon-churned waters. All three were carried far from shore.

Their ordeal unfolded as Kalmaegi made landfall along Vietnam’s central coast, bringing torrential rain, 150 km/h (93 mph) winds, and storm surges that inundated low-lying areas. The storm, which had already killed more than 200 people in the Philippines, left at least five dead in Vietnam and forced the evacuation of over 100,000 residents.

Typhoon Kalmaegi | Dramatic Footage Shows Aftermath of Philippines Typhoon.

The first survivor, Quang, was spotted Saturday morning by the Hai Nam 39 vessel south of Ly Son Island.
