KYIV, Ukraine (FN)<\/strong> \u2014 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that his government has formally requested 25 Patriot air defense systems from the United States, citing urgent needs to protect the country\u2019s energy infrastructure and civilian population from intensifying Russian aerial assaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appeal comes as Ukraine faces worsening blackouts triggered by waves of missile and drone strikes that have overwhelmed its already stretched air defenses. Zelenskyy acknowledged the high cost and long production timeline of the Patriot systems but said Ukraine cannot afford to wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to order 25 Patriot systems from the United States,\u201d Zelenskyy said in a post on X. \u201cFor us, that’s a clear budget, and we understand the financial scope; however, certain elements are missing from the agreement.\u201d He urged European allies to lend their existing Patriot batteries to Ukraine temporarily, with the understanding that replacements would be delivered later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany has delivered more Patriot systems to Ukraine than any other country, according to its defense ministry. Berlin has also supplied IRIS-T and Skynex systems to bolster Ukraine\u2019s layered air defense. Zelenskyy confirmed that additional Patriots from Germany had recently arrived, part of a broader effort to shield Ukraine\u2019s skies as winter approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these reinforcements, Ukraine\u2019s air defense network remains thinly spread across its vast territory. Russia\u2019s strategy has shifted this year, targeting regional substations and switchyards instead of the centralized national grid. The Ukrainian Energy Ministry reported new damage Monday, prompting scheduled blackouts in most regions. Zelenskyy said Moscow has massed 170,000 troops for the push. While fighting has temporarily slowed, the Institute for the Study of War said Russian forces are likely preparing to escalate attacks in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patriot systems are among the most advanced air defense platforms in the world, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft. Each battery includes radar, command units and multiple launchers. Analysts say producing 25 systems could take years, even with accelerated manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. has not publicly responded to the request. Defense officials say delivery depends on existing contracts, production capacity and congressional approval.
