Director General Mojisola Adeyeye announced the decision at a press briefing in Abuja, describing the products as \u201ceasily accessible, affordable, and concealable,\u201d and linking them to rising cases of domestic violence, road accidents, school dropouts and other social issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis ban is not punitive; it is protective,\u201d Adeyeye said. \u201cWe cannot continue to sacrifice the well-being of Nigerians for short-term economic gain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"721\" height=\"420\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-15.png?fit=721%2C420&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24000\" style=\"width:599px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-15.png?w=721&amp;ssl=1 721w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-15.png?resize=300%2C175&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-15.png?resize=696%2C405&amp;ssl=1 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The announcement follows a Senate resolution passed last Thursday directing NAFDAC to implement the ban without further delay. Lawmakers said the agency had previously postponed enforcement from 2023 to 2024, and then to 2025, allowing manufacturers to continue lobbying for extensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sen. Asuquo Ekpenyong, who sponsored the motion, said further delays would undermine public trust and Nigeria\u2019s commitment to international health standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Adeyeye said NAFDAC had earlier signed a memorandum of understanding with industry stakeholders to phase out the products, but the Senate\u2019s directive now sets a firm deadline. She urged manufacturers, distributors and retailers to begin compliance ahead of the enforcement date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The ban applies to all alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and containers smaller than 200 milliliters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think it\u2019s long overdue,\u201d said Blessing Okon, a secondary school teacher in Uyo. \u201cThese sachet drinks are everywhere, and young people are abusing them. It\u2019s affecting their behavior and their future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But some small business owners expressed concern about the economic impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis will hurt our sales,\u201d said Chukwudi Nwankwo, who runs a kiosk in Lagos. \u201cMost of my customers buy sachet drinks because they\u2019re cheap. If they\u2019re banned, I don\u2019t know how we\u2019ll survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Public health advocates welcomed the move, calling it a step toward reducing alcohol-related harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis is a win for public health,\u201d said Dr. Amina Yusuf, a community health specialist in Abuja. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen the damage these products cause, especially among vulnerable groups.
