TERNOPIL, Ukraine \u2014<\/strong> A Russian missile strike on two apartment blocks in the western city of Ternopil killed at least 10 people and wounded dozens more, including 12 children, Ukraine\u2019s interior minister Ihor Klymenko, said Wednesday. It was one of the deadliest attacks on western Ukraine since the war began in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rescue crews worked through the night to pull survivors from the rubble as flames consumed nearby cars and homes. Officials warned the death toll could rise, with families still believed to be trapped inside collapsed buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assault was part of a wider barrage. Strikes also hit the western regions of Lviv and Ivano\u2011Frankivsk, while drones targeted three districts of Kharkiv in the north, injuring more than 30 people. Photos posted online showed streets littered with debris and flames engulfing residential blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine\u2019s energy ministry reported power cuts across several regions. Damage to energy facilities and transport hubs compounded the humanitarian toll, leaving hospitals and schools struggling to operate under blackout conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 470 drones and 47 missiles in the latest wave, causing \u201csignificant destruction.\u201d He warned that civilians remained trapped in Ternopil and urged allies to accelerate air defense support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Ivano\u2011Frankivsk, regional officials confirmed that two of the three wounded were children. Lviv\u2019s governor said an energy facility had been struck, underscoring Russia\u2019s continued targeting of infrastructure far from the front lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strikes followed Ukraine\u2019s admission that it had fired U.S.-supplied long\u2011range Atacms missiles at Russian military sites, the first time Kyiv acknowledged using the weapons on Russian soil. Regional tensions widened. Romania\u2019s defense ministry said a Russian drone crossed 8 kilometers into its airspace before looping through Ukraine and Moldova. Human rights groups condemned the strikes as violations of international law. \u201cTargeting civilian housing is a war crime,\u201d Amnesty International\u2019s Kyiv office stated. International allies expressed solidarity, with Poland\u2019s defense minister vowing not to \u201cstand idle while Russia threatens our region.\u201d Romania called the drone incursion \u201ca dangerous escalation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the fourth anniversary of Russia\u2019s full\u2011scale invasion approaching in February, both sides remain entrenched.
