ABUJA, Nigeria \u2014 The Kebbi State Government has denied any involvement in the detention and investigation of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami by Nigeria\u2019s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, rejecting claims that it played a role in the case.

In a statement released over the weekend, officials described suggestions of the state\u2019s involvement as \u201cwicked and heartless,\u201d insisting that the matter is strictly between Malami and the EFCC.

Malami, who served as Nigeria\u2019s attorney general and minister of justice until 2023, has been under investigation by the anti-graft agency over allegations tied to the recovery of the Abacha loot and other financial dealings during his tenure. He was invited by the EFCC in late November and has remained in custody since December 8 after reportedly failing to meet bail conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EFCC has carried out raids on properties linked to Malami in Abuja and Kebbi State, fueling speculation about political undertones in the case. Malami\u2019s aides have claimed the raids were connected to his public references to the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report, which contained allegations of mismanagement within the EFCC.

Kebbi officials, however, sought to distance themselves from the controversy. \u201cAnybody saying we are involved in Malami\u2019s case is heartless and wicked,\u201d the government said, emphasizing that it has no hand in the commission\u2019s actions.

The denial comes amid growing public debate over the EFCC\u2019s methods and the political sensitivities surrounding high-profile corruption investigations. Supporters of Malami argue that his detention is politically motivated, while others insist the commission is simply carrying out its mandate.

Malami, a native of Kebbi State, has long been a polarizing figure in Nigerian politics, often at the center of disputes over the rule of law and the reach of executive power. His current legal troubles highlight the continuing tension between political figures and Nigeria\u2019s anti-corruption institutions.
