The strikes, announced by the United States as part of a counterterrorism effort, were conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities, according to officials in Abuja. That cooperation has sharply limited the likelihood that Nigeria would retaliate against the United States, analysts say, despite domestic and international debate over the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria: Cooperation, Not Confrontation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria\u2019s government has framed the airstrikes as a joint security action against extremist groups operating in the country\u2019s northwest, where banditry and militant violence have displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.
