The Assistant Comptroller-General in charge of Zone A, Mohamed Adamu, announced the development on Thursday, explaining that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force on March 30 in several parts of Lagos.

Adamu stated that the arrests were part of intensified efforts to enforce Nigeria’s immigration laws and safeguard national security. He noted that the NIS remains committed to curbing irregular migration and ensuring that foreign nationals comply with residency and work permit regulations. Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, has long attracted migrants from across Africa and beyond, but authorities have raised concerns about undocumented individuals contributing to security risks and overstretching public resources.

This latest crackdown is not an isolated incident. In 2023, the NIS arrested more than 200 foreign nationals in Kano State for immigration violations, many of whom were found working without permits. In 2024, Lagos authorities repatriated dozens of migrants after raids in markets and construction sites revealed widespread irregularities in documentation. Similarly, in 2025, joint operations between the NIS and security agencies in Abuja led to the arrest of over 100 foreigners suspected of involvement in criminal activities, underscoring the government’s determination to address both immigration and security concerns.

Officials have emphasized that these measures are not intended to discourage lawful migration but to ensure compliance with Nigeria’s immigration framework. Adamu reiterated that Nigeria remains open to legitimate business, tourism, and cultural exchange, stressing that foreign nationals who abide by the law are welcome. The repatriation of the 82 individuals, he added, reflects the government’s resolve to uphold immigration standards while maintaining Nigeria’s position as a destination for lawful international engagement.

Lagos, Nigeria (FN), The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Lagos State Command, has arrested 125 foreign nationals over alleged immigration-related offences, with 82 of them set for repatriation.
