Reuters reported earlier this week that a Pentagon email had floated suspending Spain from NATO and reviewing Washington\u2019s position on Britain\u2019s claim to the Falkland Islands. The note reflected U.S. frustration over allies\u2019 reluctance to grant basing and overflight rights for operations against Iran, calling such access \u201cthe absolute baseline for NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez dismissed the report, saying Madrid only responds to official U.S. government positions, not leaked emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The controversy comes as President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO, calling it a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d and suggesting the U.S. could withdraw.
