WASHINGTON (FN)<\/strong> A performer at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner described a tense moment during Saturday night\u2019s shooting, saying they locked eyes with President Donald Trump as both ducked for cover when gunfire erupted outside the Washington Hilton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The performer, who was seated near the stage, told reporters that the exchange was brief but unforgettable. \u201cWe both instinctively dropped down. For a split second, our eyes met, it was surreal,\u201d the witness said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secret Service agents rushed Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to safety as guests scrambled under tables. One officer was struck but survived thanks to a bullet\u2011resistant vest. The suspect, identified as 31\u2011year\u2011old Cole Tomas Allen of California, was subdued at the scene and is due to appear in federal court Monday on charges including firearms violations and assault on a federal officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
