He is widely recognized for reforms in education, healthcare, and fiscal prudence during his tenure. A successful businessman before entering politics, he chaired several companies including Next International Nigeria Ltd. On the national stage, Obi ran as vice-presidential candidate with Atiku Abubakar in 2019 under the PDP and contested the presidency in 2023 under the Labour Party, energizing a youth-driven movement known as the “Obidients.” He joined the NDC in 2026 after stints with APGA, PDP, Labour Party, and ADC.

Supporters on X and Facebook celebrated Obi’s clearance, with many describing him as “the people’s candidate.” TikTok clips of his 2023 campaign resurfaced, fueling optimism about his chances in 2027. Political analysts say Obi’s entry could reshape the race, given his reputation for transparency and fiscal discipline. Some lawmakers welcomed his candidacy, noting his appeal among young voters and his emphasis on accountability, while others cautioned that Nigeria’s political landscape remains unpredictable, with entrenched party structures posing challenges.

Obi’s clearance by the NDC sets the stage for another high-stakes presidential bid. His track record as governor, his populist appeal, and his reformist agenda continue to resonate with Nigerians, particularly the youth. Whether he can translate that momentum into victory in 2027 remains to be seen, but his candidacy ensures the race will be closely watched both at home and abroad.

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Democratic Congress has cleared Peter Obi to participate in its presidential primary election ahead of the 2027 polls.
