{"id":32318,"date":"2026-06-01T15:00:50","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T14:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/?p=32318"},"modified":"2026-06-01T15:00:52","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T14:00:52","slug":"adebayo-says-tinubus-economic-gains-exist-only-on-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/01\/adebayo-says-tinubus-economic-gains-exist-only-on-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"Adebayo says Tinubu\u2019s economic gains exist only on paper"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>LAGOS, Nigeria \u2014 Prince Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in next year\u2019s general election, has dismissed claims of economic progress under President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the administration\u2019s celebrated macroeconomic gains have failed to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in a television interview marking the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration, Adebayo argued that government performance should be judged by realities facing citizens rather than official statistics. \u201cNo one\u2019s life is better off except those who are in government,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen all economic policies crystallise, they are reflected in what people pay for food, rent, transportation, healthcare and education. In all of these objective indicators, no one\u2019s life is better off than before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He faulted attempts by government officials to present positive economic indicators as evidence of success, saying that if the economy were truly improving, citizens would feel it without needing official explanations. \u201cThe economy belongs to all of us. If it is working, everybody will know it is working. The devaluation of the naira creates the appearance that more money is coming in, but the reality is that the money has lost purchasing power,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adebayo maintained that official macroeconomic indicators are \u201cfaulty and incorrect\u201d because they do not correspond with the realities experienced by households and businesses. He cited rising unemployment, increasing poverty levels and declining purchasing power despite reports of GDP growth and moderating inflation. \u201cThe average Nigerian wants to know whether he can buy food tomorrow. He argued that most state governors, who belong to the APC, are implementing policies aligned with those of the Federal Government, making it difficult to separate state\u2011level outcomes from federal decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adebayo also criticized the government\u2019s borrowing strategy, claiming that much of the growth in Nigeria\u2019s foreign reserves is linked to loans rather than productive expansion. \u201cThey have engaged in heavy borrowing since coming into office, and a significant portion of the reserves being celebrated is already spoken for,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He questioned the credibility of official inflation figures, arguing that they fail to capture the realities of fuel prices, transportation costs and broader cost\u2011of\u2011living pressures.
