UYO, Nigeria <\/strong>\u2014 Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno on Thursday inaugurated the newly established Electricity Regulatory Commission, pledging to end the state\u2019s perennial power outages within 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at Government House in Uyo, Eno said the five-member commission would manage electricity assets, regulate the market, attract investors, and ensure improved supply for residents. He acknowledged the hardship faced by citizens due to inadequate electricity and directed the commission to submit its budget for approval within two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet me assure Akwa Ibom residents that government is working hard on measures to improve electricity supply across the State,\u201d Eno said. \u201cI urge you to be prepared to pay your electricity bills promptly to sustain the sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He commended the State House of Assembly for passing the Electricity Law, describing the appointments as a reflection of his administration\u2019s commitment to competence, excellence, and rapid economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commission Chairperson Mrs. Arit Uya thanked the governor for his confidence in the team. \u201cWe accept this responsibility with humility, appreciation, and a deep sense of duty. Your Excellency, we have listened carefully to your charge, and we will work diligently to fulfill your expectations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other members of the commission include Dr. Lalu Ukoha, Vice Chairman; Engr. Ubong Etukudoh, Engineering Commissioner; Dr. Valerie Obot, Finance and Corporate Support Commissioner; and Mr. Paul Okon, Economic Regulation Commissioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inauguration ceremony featured the signing of the Code of Conduct and Ethics by the commissioners and the presentation of their appointment letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reactions quickly followed across social media and policy circles. On X, user @AkwaIbomVoice wrote: \u201cIf Governor Eno can deliver on this 18-month promise, it will be a game-changer for our economy.\u201d<\/em> Another user, @PowerWatchNG, added: \u201cElectricity reform is overdue. The commission must prove it\u2019s not just another bureaucracy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stakeholders in the energy sector expressed cautious optimism. Former NERC commissioner Dr. Sam Amadi said: \u201cState-level electricity regulation is a bold step. Success will depend on transparency, investment, and enforcement.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civil society voices also weighed in. Lawyer and social commentator Inibehe Effiong posted: \u201cPromises are easy. What Akwa Ibom people want is light in their homes and businesses. The governor must be held accountable to this timeline.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative comes amid Nigeria\u2019s broader electricity reform, following the 2023 constitutional amendment that allowed states to generate, transmit, and distribute power independently.
