Officials say the move is aimed at reducing congestion, curbing extortion, and modernizing the state’s transport sector.

Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu announced the development Tuesday after the weekly State Executive Council meeting presided over by Gov. Alex Otti. “All the parks in the state have been moved to the bus terminal,” Kanu said, noting that enforcement had commenced despite initial resistance from some operators. He added that the relocation would be phased, beginning with the Abia Green Shuttle buses, followed by informal operators, and later formal transport companies.

Commissioner for Transport Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu emphasized that the government was not stripping anyone of their livelihood but introducing a more organized system. Alex Otti, elected in 2023 under the Labour Party, has prioritized infrastructure renewal and governance reforms in Abia State. The Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal, named after Nigeria’s electoral chief who oversaw Otti’s victory, is part of his broader push to modernize Umuahia’s urban landscape and restore order to the transport sector.

Many residents on social media praised the move, calling the terminal “world‑class” and “long overdue.” Others expressed skepticism, warning that enforcement could hurt small operators who rely on informal loading points. Supporters of the governor hailed the relocation as proof of his reformist agenda, while opposition voices questioned whether the government had adequately consulted grassroots operators before implementation. Analysts noted that centralization could improve safety and efficiency but cautioned that transparency in allocation of loading slots must be maintained to avoid union capture. Transport experts said the initiative aligns with global best practices in urban mobility, stressing that sustained engagement with unions will be key to success. Some operators admitted initial resistance but acknowledged the improved facilities. “If the government keeps its promises, this could be good for everyone,” one union leader said.

UMUAHIA, Nigeria — The Abia State Government has begun enforcing its new centralized transport system in Umuahia, relocating operators to the recently completed Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal.
