Retired military generals and associates of the late Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Rabe have called for urgent reforms in Nigeria\u2019s security architecture following his death at the hands of bandits in Katsina State. Rabe, a former director of Defence Information, was abducted alongside his wife on May 30 while traveling along the Marabar Musawa\u2013Kafinsoli Road. He later died in captivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a press conference in Kaduna, colleagues described Rabe as a distinguished officer whose death reflects the broader insecurity plaguing the country. They warned that kidnappings, banditry, and terrorism have become daily realities for Nigerians, eroding public confidence in government protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group commended President Bola Tinubu\u2019s strong reaction to the incident but criticized persistent shortcomings in counter-insurgency efforts. They urged stronger political will, improved border security, and regional cooperation with neighboring countries to curb arms trafficking and criminal movements. They also called on northern governors to develop a regional security framework and emphasized that no foreign nation can defend Nigeria, stressing the need for stronger national institutions and citizen cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brig.-Gen. Maharazu Tsiga, himself a former captive of bandits, argued that negotiations alone cannot end terrorism. \u201cThese people fear death and confrontation. If we face them squarely with decisive action, we will achieve more meaningful results than endless negotiations,\u201d he said. Tsiga also alleged that bandit networks benefit from insider support, including individuals with access to government resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On social media, Nigerians expressed anger and grief. One user wrote: \u201cIf a retired general can be killed by bandits, what hope do ordinary citizens have?\u201d<\/em> Another added: \u201cWe need action, not promises. Banditry has become a national shame.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Policy analysts echoed the call for reforms. \u201cNigeria\u2019s security crisis is systemic. Without coordinated strategies and accountability, banditry will continue to thrive,\u201d said Abuja-based analyst Ngozi Eze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Community leaders stressed the importance of public cooperation. \u201cSecurity is not just the job of the army.
