They did not know Wandile, a Grade 11 student at Durban Girls Secondary School, had stayed home that day.

Court evidence showed she was restrained, sexually assaulted and fatally stabbed before the intruders stole household items, including a television.

The attack came to light after a neighbor noticed one of the suspects leaving the house carrying the television. The neighbor contacted Wandile’s father, who knew his daughter was home alone and asked that someone check on her. Police were called after the teenager was found inside the house.

Two South Africans Sentenced To Death For Rape and Murder

Investigators linked both men to the crime through forensic evidence, witness testimony and recovered stolen property. During the trial, each blamed the other, but the court found the prosecution had proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Each man received a life sentence for murder, along with additional prison terms for rape and robbery. Under South African law, some of those sentences will run concurrently.

The verdict was welcomed by Wandile’s family and residents of Umlazi, many of whom had followed the case through the courts. Friends, teachers and classmates remembered her as a hardworking student with a promising future whose death left a lasting impact on her school and community.

Umlazi, southwest of Durban, is one of South Africa’s largest townships. Like many communities across the country, it has struggled with violent crime, and home invasions remain a source of concern because they often place families at risk inside their own homes.

The case has once again focused attention on gender based violence in South Africa. Women’s rights organizations welcomed the convictions but said tougher sentences alone cannot solve the problem. They continue to call for stronger policing, faster investigations, better protection for women and children, and greater investment in prevention and victim support.

Two South Africans Sentenced To Death For Rape and Murder

Wandile’s killing is one of several cases that have drawn national attention in recent years. The murders of University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana in 2019 and pregnant woman Tshegofatso Pule in 2020 prompted nationwide protests and renewed calls for stronger action against violence targeting women and girls. While authorities have introduced new laws and national action plans, advocacy groups say more work remains.

Police said the neighbor’s quick response helped investigators in the early stages of the case and highlighted the important role communities can play in reporting suspicious activity.

The United Nations has repeatedly described violence against women as a global human rights challenge and has urged governments to strengthen legal protections, improve access to justice and expand support services for victims.

For Wandile’s family, the court’s decision closes a long and painful chapter. For many South Africans, it is another reminder that justice does not end with a conviction and that protecting women and children requires sustained action from government, communities and families alike.

UMLAZI, South Africa, Two South African men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of 17 year old Wandile Aphiwe Ngcobo, bringing to a close a case that shocked the Durban area and renewed attention on violence against women and violent crime in South Africa.
