His trip carried a pointed message for both European and U.S. leaders at a time of growing intolerance and indifference toward migration. The Catholic Church\u2019s first U.S. pope chose to mark July 4, the United States\u2019 250th independence anniversary, at a migration hotspot rather than in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit came just two weeks after the European Union approved new rules expanding detention powers and establishing deportation centers outside the bloc. Leo told crowds that from Lampedusa \u201cone can more clearly perceive the momentous challenge that the phenomenon of migration poses to European societies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Europe was capable of addressing the crisis comprehensively, combining immediate relief with long term strategies to receive, protect, support, and integrate migrants. The 70-year-old pontiff began his day by praying at unmarked graves of shipwreck victims, honoring those who died at sea. His presence underscored the human toll of migration across the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, he stood alone on the island\u2019s rocky shoreline, gazing out at the waters where countless boats have been lost. The moment symbolized the peril faced by migrants and the moral responsibility of nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo met a migrant family, taking the children by the hand and standing with their pregnant mother at the \u201cDoor of Europe,\u201d a monument dedicated to those who risk everything in search of a better life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
