CALABAR, Nigeria , A 36-year-old man was fatally stabbed during an argument in southeastern Nigeria, police said Monday, in a case that has rattled a community known more for cocoa farming than violent disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Cross River State confirmed that the victim, Charles Ekuma Eze, died July 4 after being attacked in Etayip Community, Ikom Local Government Area. Police said the confrontation escalated quickly, leaving Eze with a deep wound to his rib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ASP Sunday Eitokpah, spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, told reporters that the incident was reported to the Ikom Police Division later that evening by local leaders. \u201cThe victim was rushed to Holy Family Hospital in Ikom and later referred to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead,\u201d Eitokpah said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators identified the suspect as 42-year-old Michael Ndifon, who allegedly stabbed Eze with a dagger during the dispute. Police say Ndifon is in custody as the investigation continues, though they have not disclosed a motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community leaders, including Ndifon Ndifon and Felix Agbor, who filed the initial report, have urged residents to remain calm. The killing has sparked grief in Ikom, a town of about 160,000 people that serves as a hub for Nigeria\u2019s cocoa trade and is usually known for its bustling markets and cultural festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friends described Eze as a hardworking man who was deeply involved in local life. \u201cHe was someone who always tried to bring people together,\u201d one resident said, adding that his death has left a painful void in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violent disputes remain a challenge in parts of Nigeria, where arguments can escalate into deadly confrontations. Analysts say limited access to conflict resolution mechanisms and strained community relations often contribute to such tragedies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
