LAGOS (FN) — Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has called on FIFA to improve the quality of officiating at the ongoing World Cup, warning that repeated poor refereeing decisions could undermine confidence in the global tournament.

In a post shared Friday on his verified X account, Elumelu praised the African teams that competed at the event, saying they represented the continent with pride and demonstrated the rising strength of African football.

“Well done to all the African countries that represented our continent at the World Cup. You made Africa proud and showed the world what African football is capable of,” he wrote.

But Elumelu, chairman of Heirs Holdings and one of Africa’s most influential business figures, expressed concern over what he described as inconsistent officiating. He urged FIFA, football’s global governing body, to address the issue urgently.

“@FIFAWorldCup needs to improve the standard of refereeing because if poor officiating continues, it will damage the game,” he said.

Elumelu’s comments reflect broader frustrations voiced by fans, analysts and former players throughout the tournament, where several contentious decisions have sparked debate about the use of video assistant referees (VAR), referee training and match oversight. FIFA has defended its officiating protocols in recent years, saying technology and stricter guidelines have improved fairness, though critics argue that transparency and consistency remain challenges.

African teams have drawn significant attention at the tournament, with analysts noting improved tactical discipline, stronger youth development programs and growing investment in domestic leagues. Elumelu said their performances were a source of continental pride, adding, “Congratulations once again to every African team.”

Sports governance experts say public criticism from high-profile figures can influence global conversations about officiating standards. “When respected voices raise concerns, it puts pressure on FIFA to review processes and communicate more clearly,” said a Lagos-based sports analyst.

FIFA has not responded to Elumelu’s remarks, and the organization typically issues officiating assessments only after tournaments conclude.
