BREAKING NEWS \u2014 Lindsey Graham, longtime Republican senator from South Carolina, has died at 71 after what his office described as a \u201cbrief and sudden illness.\u201d Emergency responders were called to his Capitol Hill residence Saturday evening for cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graham, a fixture in Washington for more than two decades, was first elected to the Senate in 2002. He rose to prominence as a defense hawk, a vocal supporter of Israel and Ukraine, and a fierce critic of Iran. He also served as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and later the Senate Budget Committee. A retired Air Force Reserve colonel, Graham blended military service with political influence, becoming one of the GOP\u2019s most recognizable voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tributes poured in quickly. Henry McMaster described Graham as \u201cirreplaceable,\u201d and Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised his steadfast advocacy for freedom abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graham was actively campaigning for a fifth term in 2026. Under South Carolina law, Gov. McMaster will appoint a temporary successor to serve until January 3, 2027. His passing leaves a significant void in Republican leadership, particularly on foreign policy and defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
