State officials said the funds will cover gratuities owed to retired workers who completed their years of service, as well as death gratuities for the next of kin of employees who died while serving in the state’s public service.

Governor Idris said the payment reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants, both during their years of service and after retirement. He noted that retired workers deserve to receive the benefits they earned without unnecessary delays, while families of deceased employees should also be supported.

For many retirees, gratuities are an important source of financial security. Unlike monthly pensions, gratuities are paid as a one time lump sum and are often used to settle medical bills, housing costs, business investments and other family needs after retirement.

The latest approval comes at a time when many Nigerian states are working to reduce outstanding pension and gratuity obligations. Delayed payments have remained a major concern for retirees across the country, with many pensioners calling on governments to clear years of accumulated arrears.

Labour unions and pensioners’ associations have consistently urged authorities to prioritize the welfare of retired workers, arguing that people who dedicated decades of service to the public sector should not face financial hardship after leaving office. The Kebbi government’s decision is expected to be welcomed by many of those groups.

Economic analysts say prompt payment of retirement benefits can have wider benefits beyond the individuals receiving them. The funds often flow back into local communities through spending on healthcare, education, housing and small businesses, providing support for economic activity while improving public confidence in government institutions.

Nigeria has introduced pension reforms over the past two decades to strengthen retirement systems, but many state governments continue to struggle with inherited liabilities and limited financial resources. By approving the N2.11 billion payment, Governor Idris has taken another step toward addressing those obligations while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of retired public servants and the families of workers who died in service.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has approved the release of N2.11 billion for the payment of gratuities to 772 retired civil servants and the families of deceased public workers, in a move aimed at easing the financial burden on beneficiaries who have waited for their retirement or death benefits.
