The fellowship’s position follows the All Progressives Congress’ confirmation of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima as its ticket for a second term.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, traditionally seeks religious balance in its highest political offices to maintain stability and national cohesion. The Tinubu and Shettima pairing drew intense debate during the 2023 election cycle, and the PFN’s renewed criticism suggests that concerns over representation remain significant ahead of the next vote.

PFN spokesperson Dr. Sylvanus Ukafia said the group’s National Executive Council reviewed recent political developments and concluded that the ticket does not align with Nigeria’s plural identity. He noted that the fellowship represents millions of Christians across the country and often comments on issues that touch national unity and social harmony.

The council emphasized that Nigeria can only thrive when justice, equity, and constitutional values guide political decisions. It said leadership choices should reflect the country’s multi‑religious character, especially in moments when national cohesion is essential to long‑term stability.

The PFN argued that inclusive governance helps citizens feel represented in a country shaped by multiple cultures and faiths. It warned that political decisions that overlook this diversity risk deepening mistrust and weakening the sense of belonging among different communities.

The fellowship also reminded political actors that Nigeria’s Christian and Muslim populations are both large and influential, making balanced representation a practical and symbolic necessity. It said political parties should consider this reality as they finalize their strategies for the 2027 race.

While acknowledging the right of parties to choose their candidates, the PFN urged them to prioritize unity and avoid decisions that could inflame religious sensitivities. It said leadership that reflects Nigeria’s diversity sends a strong message of inclusion at a time when the country faces economic and security challenges.

As campaigns intensify, the PFN encouraged political leaders to adopt approaches that strengthen trust and promote national cohesion. It said Nigeria’s future depends on leadership that recognizes its complex identity and works to ensure that all citizens feel seen and valued.

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria has rejected the ruling party’s decision to field a Muslim–Muslim presidential ticket for the 2027 elections, saying the choice does not reflect the country’s religious and ethnic diversity.
